Elvis, Judas, and Richard Dawkins - the wide-ranging work of Ted Harrison

— November 2013

Ted Harrison, Dawkins’ Delusion, acrylic and collage made from pages torn from Richard Dawkins' book The God Delusion.

Ted Harrison, whose work Innocence Betrayed was shown at St Paul’s Cathedral in 2011, has a new show, ‘North, South-East’ at the Georges House Gallery, Folkestone , 29 November–10 December. The artist says of his work:

I divide my life between the two places I call home: Unst, Shetland, and Hawkinge, Kent, the extreme north and south-east of the British Isles. While this exhibition of my 2012–13 artwork reflects the influence of the geography of two places, it is also about my wide and eclectic range of interests. There are religious works including the potentially controversial Dawkins’ Delusion, a crucifixion scene made from pages torn from a Richard Dawkins‘ book. Also on show for the first time will be Elvis and the Mystery of Time; plus the major work completed this summer The Twelve Apostles – The Face of Christ destined for St David’s Cathedral in Wales in 2014.

The 'Twelve Apostles' is made up of 12 individual works, each one based on one of the apostles. When the 12 are placed together they make up a single larger work (1.2m x 1.6m) showing the face of Christ, which is going to St David's for Lent 2014. The text incorporated is taken from a 200 year-old prayer book.

After a successful media career as BBC correspondent, Radio 4 presenter and television producer, Ted Harrison studied for an MA in Fine Art at UCA in Canterbury. In 2011 his installation Innocence Betrayed was the Remembrance Day focus in St Paul’s Cathedral in London. He also illustrated the recent best-seller  Legends and Lives of Improbable Saints by Richard Coles.
