Don't miss our special offers on Christmas books in Art News.

Our next full issue will be our Christmas issue, but we have new items recently added, so do take a look.  Rosalind Ormiston interviews Brian Grimwood and asks him how he became known asthe man who changed the look of British illustration’. The Jerwood Gallery's show of the early work of Gillian Ayres closes later this month - catch Ian Jones' review now.

Rosalind Ormiston also visited the Ashmolean museum in Oxford to see the exhibition 'Happy Birthday Edward Lear: 200 Years of Nature and Nonsense'.

Frances Follin reviews the show at the National Gallery London of 'Richard Hamilton The Late Works' which the artist was working on at the time of his death at 89 years. This  article appears in our Art News so anyone can read it without a subscription. Art News is regularly updated all though the month so everyone should keep an eye on it for the latest news of exhibitions and events not only here in the UK but elsewhere around the world

Our writers have been out and about visiting exhibitions and places of interest for you, and as usual they have brought you an eclectic mix of articles and reviews about art in all its forms.  Jenny Kingsley has been discovering Dorich House, the home of Dora Gordine, once an internationally renowned sculptor whose work is being rediscovered. Another interesting home is the Royal residence Kew Palace, which as Jenny says is rather special, ‘You could imagine yourself living there’.

Rosalind Ormiston visited the successful British Art Fair at the Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, which this year celebrated its 25th year, and Frances Follin interviewed Tom Hiscocks, who has recreated The Queen’s Beasts from recycled materials. He has made compelling art out of the detritus of modern life.

Herbert Hartel writes about the Kirkland Museum in Denver Colorado wherea visit ‘allows for an intimate, reflective, and revealing experience of the vibrant, dynamic paintings of this Western Surrealist-abstractionist’ and  where you can almost imagine what it would be like if Vance Kirkland (1904–81)himself were there with you. Still in the US, Victoria Keller writes on an exhibition in New York of paintings of sea and sky by the painter Jon Schueler – made while he was living in Scotland.

Claire Finn visited the visually stunning 'Bronze' exhibition, with its world survey of Bronze sculpture, at the Royal Academy. If you are anywhere near Edinburgh you should try to catch the magnificent exhibition on Catherine the Great, which closes this month. Katie Campbell reviews the catalogue for an exhibition currently touring Spain, ‘Sorolla: Gardens of Light’. This exhibition documents how the Spanish painter Joaquin Sorolla (1863–1923) turned from painting epic portraits of Spain and Spanish life to garden paintings: Moorish courtyards, royal gardens and the garden he created round his own home in Madrid – now the Sorolla Museum.

If you can’t get to an exhibition, however, books are always available from your nearest bookstore or online. We bring you reviews of books on Pre-Raphaelite, John Everett Millais; photographer Martin Parr; garden allotments as painted by Tessa Newcomb; and books on Eric Ravilious  and his much lesser-known wife, Tirzah Garwood. After compiling five volumes of a catalogue raisonné of Magritte’s output, the authors thought they had finished – but there turned out to be more, so a sixth volume has now appeared. Find out what is in it in our review.

More articles are already uploaded and more may be added before the end of the month - and don't forget to check our Art News for additional items, posted throughout the month.
