Fleming Collection, London, shows work by a new generation of Scottish artists

 As part of its successful collaboration with the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA), the Fleming-Wyfold Foundation has brought to London a selection of works by today’s most promising emerging artists from Scottish art schools.

‘New Scottish Artists: a Royal Scottish Academy exhibition supported by the Fleming-Wyfold Foundation’ will be on display at the Fleming Collection, Mayfair from 12 May to 24 June 2015. Showcasing works by 19 artists from the ‘RSA New Contemporaries’exhibition, it offers an opportunity to see the best of Scotland’s emerging talent under one roof, providing a critical platform for new graduates. The exhibition will feature the work of this year’s winner Edward Humphrey and the winners of the 2014 Fleming-Wyfold Bursary, the Brownlee Brothers.

2014 saw the launch of a new partnership between the Fleming-Wyfold Foundation in London and the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh with the Fleming-Wyfold Bursary awarded annually to an artist exhibiting in ‘RSA: New Contemporaries’. The Bursary is a significant award of £10,000, with an additional £4,000 for artistic production costs. It also includes a year of mentoring to oversee the artist’s professional development and transition into an established career.

This year’s Bursary was awarded to Edward Humphrey, a graduate of The Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee, for his video installation Another Fiction. Awarded at the opening ceremony of the ‘RSA: New Contemporaries’ exhibition on 13 March, the selection panel included: Philip Long, Director of the V&A Dundee; Griselda Murray Brown, Scottish visual arts journalist; Graham Fagen, artist and representative for Scotland + Venice 2015 at the 56th Venice Biennale; David Benson, Trustee of the Fleming-Wyfold Foundation and Selina Skipwith, Former Director of the Fleming Collection.

Rory Fleming, chairman of the Fleming-Wyfold Foundation management committee, said:

The Fleming-Wyfold Bursary is an effective way to help promote both the RSA’s work and artists within the contemporary Scottish art scene in a very tangible and positive way; and to a much wider audience. This is our first real foray into this arena at this level, and there are many other areas where the Fleming-Wyfold Foundation intends to use the Fleming Collection to strengthen its involvement and reinforce its commitment to promoting Scottish art and artists.

‘New Scottish Artists’ will feature the 2015 Fleming-Wyfold Bursary winner Edward Humphrey’s video installation Another Fiction as well as the 2014 Fleming-Wyfold Bursary winners, the Brownlee Brothers, who have produced a site-specific installation of new work for the exhibition.

Other works selected for this year’s exhibition include Charlotte Nash’s bright pink expanding foam sculptures, Moira Watson’s series of prints looking at global conflict, Samantha Wilson’s large-scale figurative drawings, Caitlin Hynes’s patchwork textile pieces, a collection of Seamus Killick’s paintings taken from VHS cassettes, and work by the recipient of the Glenfiddich Residency Prize, Ben Martin.
