Art History in the Pub - free talk in Camden, London

— January 2015

Associated media

An anonymous masterpiece? What do you read into this image?

'From the Indiscriminate to the Individual, via the Indistinct'
26 January, 7.30p.m., London

Speaker: Steven Gartside (MMU), on anonymous photographs
Guest curator: Sam Gathercole (Croydon School of Art).

Come along! Free evening talk, open to all. Click here for details.

The anonymous photograph has something of an odd relationship with the gallery and museum. Lacking the familiar requirements of things such as signature, context and history, all that remains is the image. Yet, the purposes to which the image is put, or the significance the viewer might be encouraged to read into the work, varies substantially. Going, perhaps, beyond questions of medium and into areas of collecting, curatorship, editorial control and the nature of reading.

If you've not been to Art History in the Pub before they are worth coming along to, and Monday's talk looks set to be a good one.

Art History in the Pub offers a series of informal talks that cover a broad range of art historical topics and ideas. It's a great way to spend a couple of hours whether you know a lot or a little about art history.
