West Country Meanderings
Richard Pikesley, RWS, NEAC
18 October–5 November 2014
President of the New English Art Club, Richard Pikesley is holding his third one-man show of oils and watercolours, ‘West Country Meanderings’, with The Jerram Gallery, Half Moon Street, Sherborne, Dorset DT9 3LN from 18 October to 5 November 2014.
Richard Pikesley’s art education valued tradition whilst embracing the Modern British movement of the 20th century and instilled in him a love for landscape and the effects of light and weather. This latest body of work, painted over the last couple of years, is a collection of landscapes and coastal subjects from south Devon and further west. A group of very compelling works painted on Dartmoor comes from many hours of walking and study. The smaller panels have a glorious sense of spontaneity having been painted ‘in situ’.
He cleverly captures the character of each occasion, be it a county show with a stilt walker among the crowd at Melplash, the spaniel on Weymouth Prom, the rolling wave at Chesil or the lambs and ewes on Dartmoor.
Born in 1951, Richard Pikesley started his artistic career at the Harrow School of Art before going to study at the City of Canterbury College of Art for three years. Within a year of leaving, he was elected to the New English Art Club and was elected President last year. He lives in Dorset. His work hangs in many private and public collections including S.G. Warburg Plc, Hambro’s Bank, the Crown Estates, St John’s College, Cambridge and Longleat House.
Gallery hours: Monday to Saturday, 9.30a.m.–5p.m.
