The Australian Centre for Photography (ACP) in partnership with Reportage 2014 is launching a new season of exhibitions on Friday 29 August 2014. The Spring Season features photojournalists Robert Knoth and Antoinette de Jong (The Netherlands), Jodi Bieber (South Africa) and Ashley Gilbertson (Australia).
Reportage Festival of Photography celebrates traditional and contemporary forms of documentary photography, with the aim of engaging audiences and creating an awareness for this important genre. This Season showcases four highly regarded photojournalists from across the globe, each creating visual narratives for key issues of our time.
Robert Knoth and Antoinette de Jong’s multimedia exhibition ‘Poppy – Trails of Afghan Heroin’ traces the international path of heroin production and distribution, from the bright flower fields in Afghanistan to the concrete jungle of London. Embodying two decades-worth of reporting, ‘Poppy’ exposes the contexts and consequences of heroin’s journey from East to West, along with the devastation it leaves in its wake.
Jodi Bieber’s ‘Between Darkness & Light: Selected works from South Africa 1994–2011’ is curated from two of her photographic series – ‘Between Dogs and Wolves: Growing up with South Africa’and ‘Soweto’. Marking the 20th anniversary of democracy in South Africa, Bieber provides a unique view of South Africa’s transition from a country of apartheid to the lasting legacy of Nelson Mandela.
New York-based Australian photojournalist Ashley Gilbertson’s ‘Bedrooms of the Fallen’ was conceived as a way of memorializing soldiers and marines who died in Iraq and Afghanistan. By photographing bedrooms that had been left intact, Gilbertson has created a highly personal and moving series that reveals the losses of war.
Opening night takes place on Friday 29 August, 6–8p.m. and will coincide with the launch of Reportage 2014. International guests Robert Knoth and Antoinette de Jong and Reportage Director Stephen Dupont will be present for this celebration of documentary photography.
ACP’s Spring Season is officially open to the public on Saturday 30 August with a free public talk ‘In Conversation: Robert Knoth and Antoinette de Jong’ from 2–4p.m.
