Turner Prize winner and newly elected Royal Academician, Wolfgang Tillmans has been pushing the boundaries of fine-art photography for over 25 years. Now, a decade on from the publication of its 2002 survey, Phaidon is publishing a fully updated and expanded monograph on the artist.  Featuring all of his projects from the past decade, Wolfgang Tillmans is the first comprehensive record of the artist’s entire career.

Featuring a new essay by New Museum curator Johanna Burton and an interview with MoMA curator Stuart Comer as well as new writing by Tillmans himself, Wolfgang Tillmans places the artist within a broad cultural and artistic context, exploring the breadth of his subject matter and the diversity of his approaches to capturing imagery and working with technology, as well as discussing the recent themes and developments in Tillmans’ practice and how these relate to his existing bodies of work.

Tillmans’ approach is distinguished by his close observation of the world around him. His continual desire to create new types of imagery and ways of disseminating photographs has led him to photograph people, still lifes, contemporary landscapes and the natural world in equal measure. Over the course of the past three decades his subjects have ranged from London and Berlin club culture to astronomical phenomena, still life compositions of everyday objects to intimate portraits of his friends and peers and, more recently, religious fundamentalism, global conflict and mass media consumption, as well as a continued investigation into the medium of photography itself.

Through his exploration of abstract photography he has invented subtle pictures made without a camera that defy traditional media classification, resulting in the Silver, Lighter and Freischwimmer series. More recently he has pioneered the use of advanced lens-based and digital printing technology in his Neue Welt analysis of our life and times.

Tillmans is an artist whose influence has never been restricted to the confines of the art world but has seeped into the broader context of popular culture whose style is often imitated.  Having recently chosen to divide his time between his adopted home of London and Berlin, where he has re-established his not-for-profit exhibition space Between Bridges, Tillmans has begun a new chapter in his life.  Twenty five years after he first made his name with his acute observations of the world around him - the contingent, the ephemeral and the temporal  – a period that has witnessed tremendous political and economic shifts as well as technological advancements - Tillmans is once again asking, ‘how does the world appear now, can there be a new view of it?’
