The National Gallery's exhibition, 'Strange Beauty: Masters of the German Renaissance' closes on 11 May so there is not much time left to see this show. It greatly impressed our contributor Rosalind Ormiston, who reviewed it for Cassone's March issue. Before the mid-20th century, German Renaissance art was rarely acquired in Britain, and paintings that now fascinate were considered 'ugly'. This exhibition attempts to uncover why this was so, and looks at the history of the National Gallery's collecting of this kind of art. It's an interesting glimpse of the psychology of our ancestors, as far as aesthetic taste is concerned, as well as a great collection of paintings.
