Celebrate Turner Contemporary's birthday - 16 April

On 16 April 2014 Turner Contemporary celebrates the third anniversary of its opening in 2011 with numerous events taking place throughout the day at the gallery.

To mark the anniversary, theatre company Pif-Paf will take over the gallery’s outdoor terrace to create a Colour Field, inviting the public to create a giant painting, from 1p.m. until 4p.m. The terrace will be transformed into a giant canvas where, using the Exploding Paint Cannon and the mighty Distance Ladder (a 24-square-metre Colour Wheel) visitors will become ‘Action Painters’.

Turner Contemporary’s resident choir The Big Sing will perform a range of songs in the gallery spaces. Exploring themes of physical and emotional landscape, the performance is 20 minutes long and will take place in the North Gallery at 1p.m., 2p.m.  and 3p.m. ‘Sounds Like Art’ is a new project which aims to explore the connection between art and music, and how one may enhance the other. The first performance in the series will be of a four-part song inspired by the exhibition ‘Making Painting: Helen Frankenthaler and J.M.W. Turner’. The free performances will be accompanied by sign language interpreters who will be present throughout.

At 4.30p.m. Turner Contemporary will hold a public celebration in its Clore Learning Studio. Complimentary tea and birthday cupcakes will be served while the Big Sing, Turner Contemporary's resident choir, sing happy birthday to the gallery.

Turner Contemporary is a catalyst for regeneration in Margate. The gallery would like to invite the community to celebrate this landmark occasion with them on 16 April 2014.
