1963 – A Blast from the Past

Where were you in 1963? Beginning on 22 November you can relive that eventful year by visiting a new exhibit at the Everhart Museum, Scranton PA. Vintage photographs, documents, and ephemera will take you back 50 years to a time of both exhilaration and despair. America was a world of innovation in 1963 and everything seemed possible. But despite the glow of 'Camelot', as the gilded world of the Kennedys was known, there was uncertainty on the horizon.

'1963: A Blast from the Past!' was developed by students enrolled in Public History 281, a class designed to introduce undergraduates to the world of museum and archival work. It is one of several courses offered as part of the Public History minor within Marywood University's Social Sciences Department.

Students worked with museum staff to explore this remarkable year. Researching topics and events that shaped our world 50 years ago, they focused on the following: Civil Rights Movement, Cold War Culture, JFK and his legacy, Space Race, the Shadow of Vietnam and daily life in general. The student curators of '1963: A Blast from the Past!' are: Arianna Boettger, Eileen Comninos, Dana Daly, Katie Dane, Yeslene Dijol, Anna Hickman, Shari Landy, Brian Nargi, Gia Reveillo, Julianne Reymer, & Adam Villella.

From 6.30 p.m. on the 21 November, visitors over the age of 21 are encouraged to don 1960s-style clothing and join the museum staff for a party. Tickets are limited, so book by phone (570-346-7186 ext. 521)  The cost is $35 for museum members & $45 for non-members. Tickets may be purchased online.
