If you are in the vicinity of Carlisle, England this weekend, you will be able to catch the closing days of ‘George Howard (1843-1911), 9th Earl of Carlisle, Patron and Artist’
Ths fascinating exhibition is at Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Carlisle CA3 8TP Cumbria.
The earl was not only a gifted artist in his own right, recording his family and the places he visited on his extensive European travels, but also a patron of the arts, commissioning work from his friends, William Morris, Philip Webb and Edward Burne-Jones. Over 100 exhibits tell the story of his interesting life in the second half of the 19th century and into the 20th. Read Rosalind Ormiston's review and see some more of the pictures in this month's Cassone.
