Playfulness, energy and the end of chocolate – in Washington DC

In Washington DC this summer Honfleur Gallery and The Gallery at Vivid Solutions are presenting two solo exhibitions with local artists Steven M. Cummings and BK ADAMS•I AM ART. There will be a joint opening reception for both exhibitions on Friday July 12, 2013 from 6–9 p.m. Both exhibits will also be open during LUMEN8ANACOSTIA programming, with the exhibition ending on August 30.

In 'Chocolate City Rest in Peace', photographer Steven M. Cummings documents the many changes that Washington, DC has experienced since 1991. After living here for 22 years, he has come to realize the city is chocolate no more. The final curtain is beginning to draw on the black majority. This exhibition puts forth a small selection of the scenes he has captured. The included images attest to the special relationship he has formed with the city.

Cummings graduated from MICA’s M.F.A. in Photographic & Electronic Media in 2010. He has been profiled in many major news outlets, including The Washington Post and Smithsonian.

BK ADAMS•I AM ART recreates the playfulness and energy of being free in 'Mynd Up'. His goal is ‘2 become 2 change 2 grow 2 be imbedded 2 be one with 2 be a part of every canvas 2 be in every sculpture 2 be a walking exhibit’. Adams has exhibited with Honfleur Gallery in several group East of the River exhibitions and this is his first solo showing at the space.

Adams was the winner of the first annual East of the River Distinguished Artist Award in 2012, a prize presented by Honfleur Gallery and the Gautier Family, which recognizes a current EotR artist for artistic excellence as well as significant impact on DC cultural life. Also in 2012, he completed a residency in Telluride, Colorado with the Mountainfilm Festival. Adams has been featured several times in The Washington Post. He’s also been reviewed locally in Washingtonian Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine and The Root.

BK ADAMS•I AM ART and Steven M. Cummings are frequent collaborators; they worked with Honfleur Gallery to create a pop-up space in Anacostia during FOTOWEEKDC 2009 and also for Cummings’ thesis project. Both artists have had solo exhibitions at The Anacostia Community Museum; Adams in 2011 and Cummings in 2012.

Honfleur Gallery is a contemporary fine art gallery located in Historic Anacostia at 1241 Good Hope Road SE, Washington, DC 20020. The Gallery at Vivid Solutions is a photography and digital exhibition space, that opened in 2009. It has relocated to the upstairs space at Honfleur Gallery. Honfleur Gallery opened in 2007. Both are projects of ARCH Development Corporation.
