The new exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery is a showcase of the Russian contemporary art scene titled ‘Gaiety is the Most Outstanding Feature of the Soviet Union: Art from Russia’.Judging by the artworks, Russia is a continuous whirlpool of diversity; pushing artists to boundaries not visited since the cold war. It is a thought-provoking pursuit through the minds of Russia’s foremost artists, refreshingly brought together to debate art in Russia today. Don’t miss Sergei Vasiliev’s series ‘Russian Criminal Tattoo Encylopaedia’, 2010 – prisoners’ illegal tattoos created with their own blood and urine with coded messages against the Soviet regime hidden within; Sergei Pakhamov’s 382 Sins, 2012; Dasha Shishkin’s Survival Takes a Good Memory,2012; and Valery Koshlyakov’s hauntingly beautiful Grand Opera, Paris, 1995.
