Margaret Thomas is a robust and energetic 95 and has painted all her life. In its annual exhibition of over 400 works, the New English Art Club (NEAC) has a small tribute exhibition to Margaret, including a painting from 1951 (Self Portrait in Sun Hat) when she was elected a member, and her most recent studio still life, whichhas come directly off her easel.
Margaret exhibited her first work at the NEAC in 1933 at the age of 17. After her education, the not-so-small matter of the Second World War held her back, but she has not missed an Annual Exhibition since 1946, always referringto the New English as her spiritual home.
Margaret’s work and life spans much of the 20th century and she knew many of the famous trail-blazing female artists of the NEAC, including Claire Atwood (her first paintingtutor), Beatrice Bland and Dame Ethel Walker.
A faithful member of the NEAC and a bold and invigorating life force, Margaret will also be guest of honour at the Private View and officially open the exhibition at 6.30 p.m. on Thursday 29 November
The New English Art Club's Annual Exhibition provides the public with an important opportunity to see the paintings and drawings of the country's leading figurative artists. Their work can be viewed alongside those of selected non-members in a diverse show of outstanding quality.
