How very sad to hear of the death of Robert Hughes. He had a gift for explaining art that few could match and his series 'The Shock of the New' broadcast by the BBC in 1980 has not been equalled since. The book that accompanied the series has led many, many people to explore and appreciate modern art.
Hughes was Australian but moved to London in his 20s, writing about art for the Observer and Times newspapers, before moving to New York as a critic for Time magazine. He was extremely witty - and used his wit mercilessly against those whom he believed were conning the public in any way.
He is a great loss to the world of art and art writing.
