In 2008 The Lightbox gallery and museum won The Art Fund Prize, the annual celebration of the very best of UK museums and galleries. In recognition of this award and to mark the award in a more permanent way The Lightbox has named its new ground floor gallery space after the prize. To celebrate the naming of the gallery Director of the Art Fund, Dr Stephen Deuchar visited The Lightbox along with members of the Art Fund.
Speaking about the naming of the gallery, Director of The Lightbox, Marilyn Scott, said ‘The Lightbox is most grateful to The Art Fund for the award, which enabled us to achieve a national profile and has undoubtedly played a major part in The Lightbox’s continued success.’
The new gallery space, which opened in late 2011, allows The Lightbox greater space to exhibit local art, community-based projects and exhibitions of local and national significance.
The purpose of the £100,000 Art Fund Prize is to recognize and stimulate originality and excellence in museums and galleries and to increase public appreciation and enjoyment of all they have to offer. The Art Fund is the national fundraising charity that helps UK museums and galleries to buy great art for everyone to enjoy.
