Luxury operator offering savings on autumn art tours

Cox & Kings is the appointed travel partner for the Royal Academy of Arts for 2012. On behalf of the Friends of the Royal Academy, the luxury tour operator has created a new collection of expert-led art tours that are open to anyone with a passion for the arts, architecture and archaeology.

The lecturers are with the clients throughout tour, making themselves available for informal discussions as well as occasional evening lectures and site-talks, which will supplement the local guides. Through the lecturers expertise and enthusiasm, the fascinating destinations come to life and the tours become truly enriching and educational experiences. In addition, most of the tours include special visits, access to artworks not open to the wider public or talks by curators of local exhibitions.

The following tours departing in the autumn still have spaces available and special offers

Bay of Naples: Pompeii & Herculaneum departing 30 August, 7 days from £1,404 per person, saving £80 per person. Andrew Allen, an expert in the art and architecture of the Italian peninsula, will lead this tour, which includes special private visits have been arranged to areas not usually open to the public including Casa del Menandro and Casa dei Vetti in Pompeii. It also includes the thermal springs at Baia, Pozzuoli amphitheatre, the Greek temples of Paestum and treasures of Naples Museum.

Sicily: Crossroads of the Mediterranean departing 10 September

9 days from £2,054 per person, saving £150 per person

. Jonathan Prag, who lectures at the University of Oxford, specializes in ancient Sicily is leading this tour to Sicily. This tour includes an exclusive visit to the Palazzo Gangi, which is noted especially for its Sicilian Baroque ballroom decorated with Murano chandeliers, gold fittings and glittering mirrors. It is here, that in 1882 Wagner composed the opening bars of Parsifal and in 1963 Luchino Visconti filmed the magnificent ball scene of The Leopard.



Albania & Macedonia: Cradle of the Balkans departing 20 September for 

10 days from £1,604 per person, saving £105 per person. 

Led by, William Taylor, an Anglican priest and chairman of the Anglican and Eastern Churches Association, this tour includes sites not normally open to the general public and includes meetings with senior clerics. Travelling across these two countries, the tour visits archaeological and historical sites as well as a wealth of art treasures.



Ancient Lands of Eastern Turkey departing 23 September

 for 7 days from £1,586 per person, saving £80 per person

Konstantine Politis, a specialist in the early Byzantine-Christian and Islamic periods, will lead this tour, which includes meetings with curators of the archaeological museum in Kars and the archaeology and ethnography museum in Van. A special lecture on Urartian civilization has also been arranged with Mr Mehmet Mustepe, who reads Urartian Letters.



Cox & Kings will pay a fee to the Royal Academy for every booking on the arts tours programme.
