21 February is Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras or Carnivale), traditionally the day when dairy products were used up before fasting began for Lent – hence the popular name of Pancake day.
Experimental food experts Polly Betton and Andrew Stellitano have built a series of 3D landscapes created from pancakes – yes, they are edible. The adventurous pair have created plate-sized edible desert islands, volcanoes, icebergs, rapids, and forests photographed by Dominic Davies who did the photography for Heston Blumenthal’s Big Fat Duck Cookbook.
You can make them yourself – you can watch Andrew demonstrating these panscapes before having a go too. Kits are available with all the aspiring panscapist needs – even smoke powder for the volcano, though at £99.99 you may prefer to stick to something more conventional. On the other hand, if you think you can do better, Lyles Golden Syrup are offering some kits as prizes for the most impressive photos uploaded to their facebook page.
