Eve Arnold, the American photographer and photojournalist, has died in London at the age of 99. She photographed such historic figures as Queen Elizabeth II, Malcolm X, Jackie Kennedy and, perhaps most famously, Marilyn Monroe. Eve Arnold published a number of books herself – one is due out later this year – and was the subject of books by others, such as Eve Arnold's People by Brigitte Lardinois and Anjelica Huston (published by Thames and Hudson, illustrated above).

The daughter of immigrants, Arnold was born in Philadelphia in 1912, one of eight siblings, but moved to the UK in the 1960s.

Despite her reputation for photographing the rich and glamorous, Arnold also took many pictures of much humbler, even impoverished, people. She worked for the Magnum photographic agency, the first woman to do so, and travelled extensively for her work.

She received a number of awards from British and other institutions, including an honorary OBE, and honorary degrees from the universities of St Andrews and Staffordshire. At the Sony 2010 World Photography Awards Arnold was given a Lifetime Achievement award.
