Tally Beck Contemporary will present an exhibition of the artist collective island6, from Shanghai, China. The eclectic group is well-known for their dynamic LED work and inventive digital multi-media pieces. The exhibition, entitled ‘Sin City—Impressions of Shanghai: New Work by island6’, will open at Tally Beck Contemporary, 42 Rivington St., on Wednesday, 25 January 2012, with an opening reception from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. and will run until 11 March. The event will also be a celebration of the Chinese New Year with a special lion dance performance by Dance China New York and catering by Marja Samsom.

‘Sin City—Impressions of Shanghai’will comprise over a dozen multimedia pieces produced in 2011 and 2012. In addition to the many LED creations, highlights will include new neon work, telephone interactive video and other new media yet to be exhibited in the USA.

island6 has begun to shine on the Asian contemporary art scene because of their innovative use of electronic media to characterize the city of Shanghai. This exhibition explores the realties and myths of 1930s Shanghai, focusing on female sexuality and issues of exoticism, eroticism and Orientalism. Combining videographic technology with LED lights and found objects such as furniture and décor elements, the collective produces animated, socio-historical vignettes of 1930s Shanghai and the collision of Chinese and colonial cultures. The work of island6 has been shown extensively in Asia and Oceania as well as in art fairs and special exhibitions in the USA, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain and Morocco.

Tally Beck Contemporary is a New York-based gallery that also operates a private dealership in Bangkok and focuses on Asian contemporary art. Founded in 2010, the gallery emphasizes fresh expression from East and Southeast Asia with regular exhibitions. Tally Beck Contemporary also maintains a strong presence at international art fairs, including SCOPE Basel, Art Asia Miami and the LA Art Show.
