Kristjana S. Williams – a ‘new antiquarian’?

Kristjana S.Williams is a fast-rising, Icelandic-born artist whose brilliant and daring Victorian engraving  mash-ups are being snapped up by the V&A and the Chanel Group, among others. Her first solo show, which opens on 10 November at London’s Outline Editions galleryin Soho, will seal her reputation as a  British pioneer of what the New York Times has dubbed the ‘New Antiquarian’ movement.

Interweaving fragments of Victorian prints with contemporary illustration and colouring, Williams creates  delirious, magical landscapes, filled with impossible, exotic creatures. The show is entitled ‘Dyragardur’,  which means ‘animal garden’ in Icelandic. Some of her large-scale murals were recently displayed at the V&A’s British galleries as part of the London Design Festival and two huge new works, emblazoned in gold leaf and commissioned for a private client, will form the  centrepiece of the show at Outlines Editions.

Also on display will be a collection of her affordable prints, which will also be included in Liberty’s new print collection launching on 7November.As well as illustration, Williams’ work spans the worlds of fashion and homeware, and for the past eightyears she has been the Creative Director of Beyond the Valley, a fashion and design store in London’s West End.

In addition, a wide selection of affordable new prints for Christmas will also be on display at the gallery by Outline Editions’ unrivalled stable of artists at the forefront of graphic art, including Noma Bar,  Anthony Burrill, Kate Moross, Patrick Thomas and David Foldvari.
