An exhibition at Compton Verney, Warwickshire, UK
25 June to 2 October 2011
Stanley Spencer is remembered for his religious paintings, his war paintings and his nudes. A lesser-known aspect of his life was his love of gardens. His oil paintings of gardens and landscapes reflect both his love of nature and the effects of the spread of the suburbs from the 1920s to the 1940s. So the paintings are not only very beautiful but also historically interesting and relate very much to modern concerns with ecology and preservation of nature.
