National Gallery of Art, Washington acquires Marshall painting

The National Gallery of Art has acquired Great America (1994) by the African American artist Kerry James Marshall (b. 1955). This is the Gallery’s first purchase of his work. The painting, shown here, will be on view from 1 May in the East Building's Concourse galleries. The work was selected by the Gallery’s Collectors Committee. Marshall graduated in 1978 from the Otis College of Art and Design and he has himself taught at the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His paintings and sculptures have themes of African American social and political history from the perspective of domestic life. He represented the USA at the Venice Biennale in 2003.
